6 DAYS RWANDA IN THE WILD Experience
Explore Tours
Rwanda is a magical landscape of a thousand hills and a million smiling faces. Etched into global consciousness by the brutality of the 1994 genocide, the social and economic repair that has occurred since is nothing short of miraculous, the country is stable and tourism is once again a key contributor to the economy. The jewel in the jungle green crown of the country lies in the majestic Virunga Volcanoes where
populations of endangered mountain gorillas still roam, fiercely protected by passionate people, and attract curious visitors from around the world. Primate safaris may be the primary drawcard for the country, but it’s not all monkey business – go beyond the gorillas, step into an adventure playground waiting to be discovered by the active traveler and experience a country breathtaking in its beauty and graced by a people generous in their welcome.
Our Rwanda Active itinerary encompasses all the iconic attractions Rwanda is famous for. From the contemporary city vibe of Kigali to the village clad rolling hills of the countryside, we bike,
kayak, and trek our way from the sparkling streets of the capital city and the sweeping savannahs and lakes of Akagera National Park, into the lush green rain forests of Nyungwe National Park, along the sparkling shoreline of Lake Kivu and ending in the shadows of extinct volcanoes tracking endangered mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park.

A fast-growing cosmopolitan town of 1m inhabitants with wide and landscaped boulevards, world class hotels and restaurants as well as an international airport, it is reputedly the best organized and cleanest city in Africa. Akagera National Park is located in the east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. It is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a labyrinth of lakes. The rolling hills of Acacia woodland coupled with scattered grassland and swamp-fringed lakes along the watercourse combine to create a park of breathtaking beauty. You will arrive at Akagera Game Lodge, check in and you will go for a 4:30 pm sunset boat ride. Sunset boat cruises are offered daily out on to Lake Ihema, one of the largest lakes in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park.
This boat safari is led by an experienced guide, who’ll take you out across the lake, to meander along the forest-fringed shores in the hope of spotting some of the 480 bird species identified in Akagera national park. Akagera counts some rare and unique birdlife, including the iconic African fish eagle and large flocks of crowned cranes, along with the Carruther’s Cisticola, endemic to the wider Lake Victoria area, and of course the extraordinary shoebill stork. The latter is very much a birder’s bucket list species, and exceptionally rarely seen anywhere around the lake (your best chance is deep in the papyrus swamps at the far northern end of the park - but do not hold your breath). Many hippos and crocodiles are also resident in Lake Ihema, plus you have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife on the lake shores – often herds of buffalo wander down to the lakeshores, and individual topi make use of the nearby anthills to stand sentry.

After the gorilla trekking experience, you will return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you have an option to enjoy the facilities and activities at the lodge. Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range - home of the rare mountain gorilla - and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath. The high point of the trek will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance, as they go about their daily life: feeding, playing, resting, grooming and raising their young.
