Nyungwe National Park
Aside from its small population of chimpanzees, Nyungwe is also home to 12 other primate species, including the endangered L'Hoest's monkey, which is only found in the Albertine Rift. While many tourists come to Nyungwe specifically to go on a gorilla tracking adventure in the dense forest, the park has much more to offer.
There are fifteen pathways for hikers to take in everything that the woods have to offer. There are walks for every level of fitness, from easy strolls to strenuous treks. The incredible diversity of plant species, with over 1,000 recorded and 140 orchids alone, will fascinate botanists. The 322 bird species are a treat for birdwatchers, and they include the elusive Red-collared Babbler and 29 other endemic species to the Albertine Rift. At least 120 kinds of butterflies flit throughout the woodland, adding to its already spectacular biodiversity.
